Thieves do not like being seen, they prefer dark shadowy areas where they can hide. Consider fitting quartz halogen-type floodlight coupled to a Passive Infra-Red (PIR) these are very popular and relatively cheap to buy.

Low wattage lights that come on automatically at dusk and stay on until dawn are also quite popular, however siting of the lights is important as dark shadowed area can be created and provide hiding places for thieves.
