External doors information

If you only have a traditional Yale type lock on your front door then you should consider fitting an additional mortice lock that needs a key to open from either side of the door. Make sure that the lock you choose is manufactured to at least British Standard BS3621. In some areas your insurance company will insist upon this type of security.

Any other exit door (back door for example) should also have a mortice lock fitted. You could consider using mortice security bolts. These are the type that can only be opened from the inside.

Locks are only as good as the quality of the wood in the door and frame, or as the security of the frame. If the door or frame are not in good condition you should have these repaired or replaced before fitting new locks.

UPVC or aluminium type doors will usually have a key operated multipoint locking system fitted by the manufacturer and so are already secure.
