Yorkshire couple left out of pocket due to underinsurance
A Yorkshire couple have been left short after being burgled at gunpoint, it has been reported.
In a suspected case of mistaken identity, the couple, Leonie Blakeley and Mark Bove, lost around £1,200 of possessions after a gang of five burglars broke into their home and robbed the couple.
It is suspected that the burglary was a case of mistaken identity as the men were demanding to know where illegal drugs were kept.
While such a phenomenal burglary is rare, the case brought up the issue of underinsurance, which led to the couple only being reimbursed for half the value of their stolen goods.
This happened because since taking out a policy, Ms Blakeley and Mr Bove had acquired more valuable furnishings such as TVs and DVD players - as most households do over time - but had failed to tell their home insurance company.
As such, the home insurance firm would not cover all of the value of the stolen goods, leaving the couple out of pocket.
