Test your fire alarm before it tests you
Posted on February 23rd 2009
It is now becoming more apparent to firefighters that not enough people have fire alarms fitted in their house and are not testing them regularly. They have once again been made aware of this after a fire broke out in a Southampton, where a family of four where trapped in an upstairs bedroom.
The smoke found itself coursing through the house trapping the family of four and blocking any means of escape. This is after they had left a casserole simmering overnight on the hob.
A spokesman for the fire service said: “The house had no smoke alarms fitted and most of the doors had been left open, allowing the smoke to spread making it difficult for the residents to escape.” Fire officers are now also urging everyone living in a house to also shut all the doors when they go to bed, this will ensure that the fire will be contained in the room and starve itself of oxygen.
Fortunately one of the residents woke up and called 999 alerting the fire brigade, who where then able to quickly asses the situation and lead the family to safety.
