Tenants benefiting from Energy Performance Certificates

Energy performance certificates, which form part of the Home Information packs (HIP), are already being offered to some tenants – despite not being legally required until October 2008.

Landlords are already conducting upgrades to ensure that their properties conform to the standards.

David Salusbury, chairman of the National Landlords Association (NLA), comments: "Many members of the NLA have invested much time and money into making their properties energy efficient: putting in an efficient boiler, installing double glazing, lagging pipes and laying insulation in the roof."

Tenants should note that home insurance companies could use this 'green' information to reduce premiums.

David Salusbury also points out: "Measures such as these can significantly reduce energy bills, which is good news for tenants too."
