Students take £6,000 worth of kit to university

Students take possessions to university worth a total of over £6,000 on average, according to a new survey.

Research from insurer Endsleigh has revealed that expensive items such as laptops, musical instruments and MP3 players, mobile phones and clothes all contribute to the total.

But, more worryingly, the study showed that 41 per cent of students do not have contents insurance, with 30 per cent claiming that the risk of theft is not high enough to justify securing cover.

Rhiannon Harris, a spokesperson for the firm, said: "Students are taking a lot of expensive possessions with them to university now and many of these items, such as laptops, MP3 players and mobile phones, are an easy target for thieves."

The survey of 1,000 current students and university applicants also showed that 81 per cent currently have a laptop, while one in four own a musical instrument.
