Straw council houses being tested
Posted on January 28th 2009
500 bails are all it takes to build a council house made of straw, cutting costs and energy consumption. The 6 trial properties are being built in the UK costing £60,000, which is £20,000, less than a conventional property.
The properties look very similar to normal housing however rather than the brick faced properties you would see down any street the houses outer walls will be whitewashed with lime.
The dwellings will be on the national grid but gas will only be supplied for cooking facilities. They will also have a wood burning stove for the cold winters.
There is 2 million tons of straw that is not needed that is produced every year in the UK. This amount of straw could build 250,000 homes a year.
