Six million fire-happy Brits risk homes

Six million Britons are prepared to use dangerous accelerants to get their homemade bonfires going, research has shown.

With private fireworks parties planned up and down the country over the next few days many could be running the risk of damaging themselves, their guests and their property.

A poll by Halifax Insurance suggests many Brits have a worryingly relaxed attitude.

The insurer's Vicky Emmott said that while fireworks night should be fun, anyone putting on their own party should take precautions.

"It is important to double check your insurance to ensure you are covered for fire damage to property, personal liability, and garden damage," she said.

"Those with cats and dogs may also want to consider pet insurance to protect their furry friends from the potential dangers of bonfire night."

Stray fireworks or out-of-control bonfires can pose a risk to homes, garden fences and sheds, while many insurance policies will not cover damaged caused by the emergency services.

Animals are also at risk, as many pets get frightened by the noise and either bolt or get agitated and damage household possessions.ADNFCR-1193-ID-18339351-ADNFCR
