Save on utility bills - insulate older properties
The Energy Saving Trust is urging all homeowners to resolve to check their loft insulation this New Year.
The UK could cut its carbon emissions by seven million tonnes per year and each householder could save almost £100 on their bills just by ensuring that loft insulation is laid to a depth of 270mm. (11 inches)
Rob Bell, 'energy doctor' with the Energy Savings Trust, advises: "Insulation is all about heating - saving on your heating bills and there are three main areas.
"Nearly 50 per cent of all heat lost from the home is through the roof and the walls, so these are the first two - people need to look at insulating their loft (for the roof) and their walls if they can. Thirdly, a smaller one that is often forgotten is about insulating the floor as well."
Property sales now require a home information pack, which includes an energy saving certificate. Property owners can apply for financial assistance to upgrade their energy rating.
Some home insurance providers also give discounts for "green" home improvements, so if you insulate your home contact your insurer to check that you are not missing premium discounts.
