Region has empty housing but council want to build more
Posted on February 13th 2009
East Staffordshire’s Borough Council has announced its commitment in building 12,900 homes under Government guidelines, even though a 10th of housing in the region is empty.
The figures released by the council shows that there is 3,248 houses with no one living in them, consisting of 2,154 for sale or rent, 437 have been empty for a long period and 627 are undergoing renovation work.
The Governments’ demands are unavoidable by the council who have commented that they are staggered by the decisions which will destroy the countryside.
The borough councillor, who spoke for the Burton Ward, feels that the number of houses needed has been grossly over calculated and doesn’t see that there will be the demand.
Some of the empty houses are looking in to being purchased from the Government by Trent and Dove to make affordable housing, however unfortunately many are owned privately and maybe used as second homes.
