Parents unclear on insurance for uni children's possessions
New research has revealed today (July 28th) that nearly a quarter of parents are in the dark when it comes to insuring their children's possessions for university.
Esure home insurance carried out a survey which showed that 24 per cent of parents have not even considered covering items belonging to their sons or daughters when they head to university.
Furthermore, around one in ten (12 per cent) automatically assume that possessions are covered by their normal home insurance policy, leaving their children open to a potentially devastating financial loss.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure home insurance, said: "It is very important that parents make sure they have sufficient contents cover in place to protect their child's belongings - either by checking whether it's included in their current policy or taking out separate insurance.
"Not having suitable insurance in place would hit students hard in the pocket and take a real chunk out of a student loan to replace the type of gadgets and designer gear that entices thieves."
The study showed that the average student will have £1,500 worth of property with them when they arrive at university for the start of the 2008-2009 year.
