Over-50s most prudent in home evacuation situation

A new poll has revealed that over-50s would rule with their head over their heart if faced with a disaster in their homes.

RIAS, a specialist insurer for the age group, found that 39 per cent of over-50s homeowners would salvage important documents if forced to rapidly evacuate in the event of fire or flooding.

With the threat of flooding, in particular, growing in several parts of the country, the research also underlines the fact that homeowners should ensure they have adequate home and contents insurance to cover all eventualities.

Janet Connor, the company's managing director, said: "Coping with the effects of a fire or flood in our own homes is something we all hope we will never have to confront in our lifetimes.

"Yet the over-50s are clearly a level-headed lot when it comes to thinking about the practicalities of such a crisis.

"Having the right buildings and contents insurance is a must. This really is of paramount importance, as is making sure you have the correct level of insurance in place."
