NS&I espouses benefits of gardening
Homeowners are being encouraged to locate their pitchforks and trowels by National Savings and Investment (NS&I) as part of Recycle Week, which starts on Monday (June 2nd).
According to NS&I, growing vegetables herbs and salads is cheap and easy - and will benefit both the environment and consumers' bank balances.
Even more savings can be made by using recycled materials in the garden, John Prout, sales and retention director at NS&I, says.
"Growing your own vegetables is a great way to save money and the environment, and Recycle Week presents the perfect opportunity to combine it with another great money-saving activity," he confirmed.
Tips provided by NS&I include using old plastic bottles for growing seeds in, making compost from kitchen waste and using cut-up plastic bags as plant ties.
However, gardeners will still have use for traditional garden implements such as lawn mowers, hedge strimmers and chain saws, meaning the value of contents in their sheds and garages is likely to remain high.
