NI family 'extremely lucky' to escape fire
A family in Northern Ireland had an "extremely lucky" escape from a house fire on Sunday morning (September 22nd), it has been reported.
The Derry Journal reports that three fire engines and 15 crew members were called to a house fire at 07:00 BST on Sunday morning after a chip pan had been left unattended and the smoke detector had not been working.
District fire commander Willie Lynch said: "When we arrived the family had already escaped to safety but were suffering from smoke inhalation.
"They had very little time to get out and considering they had disconnected the smoke alarm, were extremely lucky on this occasion.
"The Fire Service strongly advise installing and maintaining smoke alarms and that people who are using a chip pan, be it during day or night, never leave it unattended."
In such fires it may be that smoke damage causes greater problems than the fire itself, as smoke can spread faster than fire.
