My home for 96 years
A 100-year-old lady from Hampshire is celebrating 96 years of living in the same home. Muriel Noyce moved into her terraced Romsey house when she was just 4 with her 10 brother and sisters. She continued to live there with her family until now where she is left alone with her 3 cats after her sister, Elvira passed away in 2005.
Ms Noyce said: "Things have changed, you did not have to lock your front door in those days. People were polite to you. Youngsters respected their elders but now they drink and swear in public places at all hours. When I was younger there was a butcher and a baker and a coal yard in the street, and they have all gone."
Muriel has worked as a cinema usher and a typist In order to support her family and pay the bills, although she spoke of how things where a lot cheaper when they first moved in. Her father made a living working at Southampton Docks and paid just 10 shillings rent a week, which in today's money is just 50p. The value of the property then was just £400 but today you would be looking to pay around £225,000 for the Hampshire property.
