Location of fire alarm can save your life
A home in Penrith has been affected by severe fire damage after a fire broke out in the upstairs of the property when a couple left a candle unattended.
The couple were lucky to be alive after the candle, which had been left unattended in an upstairs bedroom, set fire to the soft furnishing, spreading throughout the upstairs. A fire alarm was installed in the property but it had been placed at the bottom of the stairs, which as recommended by the fire service should be located at the top.
Neighbours caught site of the flames in the upstairs window and alerted the couple who were sat blissfully unaware in the lounge watching TV as the fire alarm had not gone off. The fire service was called to the blaze at 9.20pm, where it took a team of 11 to embark upon the flames, trying to prevent it from spreading to neighbouring properties.
Insure My House can provide you with house insurance to protect your property against any fire claims, however property owners need to be aware that in order for fire alarms to be most effected they need to be placed at the top of the stairs as heat rises.
