How your 'spring-clean' may uncover savings

Spring cleaning - the bane of every housewife - uncovers all sorts of
'forgotten' items. Guaranteed to produce cries of "so that's where it
went!" it may also reveal other postponed tasks that may have caused
problems if left undone.

Over eight out of ten people have a smoke alarm within their home, and
three in ten people have a security alarm system - yet half of people
admit to installing it, and then forgetting to get it maintained.

Elaine Parkes, head of technical services for Legal & General's general
insurance business, said: "Customers are required to take reasonable
steps to safeguard their property and contents against loss or damage as part of the terms of their household insurance cover.

"This includes ensuring that their property is maintained in a good
condition. Simple checks should give customers confidence that their
property is safe and secure and more importantly, covered by meeting the terms of their policy."

Home insurers also often require homeowners to fit locks to windows and
doors. Spring cleaning is a good time to oil the working parts, and
hinges. The keys need to be on hand to help escape, in case of fire, but not accessible for burgulars.
