How to proceed if the water starts to rise

Flood advice is being offered to homeowners in the light of recent high winds and stormy weather.

The Met Office has urged people in high-risk areas to find the telephone number of their home insurance provider, and any emergency help lines.

Precious documents should be stored in waterproof containers, in the upstairs rooms of the house. This includes sentimental photographs, which may usually be out on display.

A torch, first-aid kit, change of clothes, containers full of fresh water and dry blankets should also be kept upstairs in case of overnight water build up.

Paul Emptage, head of loss adjusting at Royal & SunAlliance, says: "In situations like these, we will do everything we can to take the hassle away from people.

"By following these basic steps, you will be able to reduce the amount of damage to your possessions and your home. Our claims staff is trained to deal with these disasters. They will relieve some of the immense stress and strain these situations can bring. My advice to anyone affected by flooding is to use the skills and services offered by your insurance company."
