Homeowners urged to watch for policy gaps
Householders have been urged to look out for gaps in their buildings and contents policies.
The product research business, Defaqto, warns that some insurers do not cover many of the possible costs incurred by adverse weather conditions such as flooding and storm damage.
Policy holders should check they have 'contents in the open' and 'alternative accommodation cover'.
They should also be aware of 'non-occupancy clauses' and clauses covering 'escape of water from any fixed water apparatus or pipes'.
Mel Gray, senior researcher at Defaqto, says: "It's essential that people check that the sums insured under their buildings and contents policies are adequate to cover such a catastrophic event."
This August was the coldest for ten years and despite having had recent warm winters, the Met office has predicted this winter will be 'noticeably colder' than last year.
