Home insurance policies need extensive contents cover

Financial services provider Zurich has warned that people are putting themselves at risk by carrying expensive gadgets around with them.

The cost of belongings that a person, on average, carries around with them amounts to £851, while over-35s are most at risk, carrying around £991 in possessions.

This can make them more at risk from opportunistic thieves who target things such as MP3 players and mobile phones.

Zurich has additionally reported that there has been an increase in claims over stolen personal property.

The company has also advised people to ensure that their home contents insurance will cover them for belongings when they are taken out of the house in the event that a robbery does occur.

"Check your policy and have your own personal safety top of your list when you're out and about," said a spokesperson for the firm.
