Home insurance 'likely to peak' during holidays
Home insurance claims often peak during the summer for various reasons, but one survey has recently found that homeowners going on holiday are not taking adequate precautions to protect their belongings.
Despite most burglaries occurring while homes are unoccupied, holiday makers appear to be in such a rush to get away that many are failing to secure their homes (seven per cent), and only one in ten arrange for somebody to check in on their home while they are away.
Chris Collings director of insurer development at one insurer, said: "It's worth remembering that some household insurance policies might not cover you if you've said that you have a burglar alarm but then it's not activated at the time of a break in.
"It's always worth checking your small print or talking to your broker if you're unsure about what your home insurance policy details are," he added.
One piece of advice offered is to hide valuables but ensure the house looks lived-in while owners are away.
