Holiday houses also need home insurance
Holiday homeowners have been reminded by the British Insurance Brokers' Association that their second homes will also need to be insured.
Technical services manager Graeme Turgdill advised homeowners to turn to insurance brokers for advice, as the properties would most likely need a different policy to account for other factors.
Some of the reasons listed included unfamiliar locations and irregular use of the holiday properties.
"If you were to just take out a normal insurance policy for a second home in the UK, then you are not going to have the right cover there because it's going to be unoccupied for a long period.
"After 30 days you won't have cover for things like theft, in certain circumstances," he said.
The Office for National Statistics recently released figures showing that 0.5 per cent of the country's housing stock is in holiday homes.
