Heat-saving tips encouraged for winter
US customers of Allegheny Power are being reminded to check their homes for air leaks before the winter sets in, in an attempt to reduce household energy bills over the coming months.
It is a practice that would benefit UK homeowners too, as air leaks from either windows, doors or the loft can cause the cost of central heating to rise dramatically.
However, while those found around a window can easily be sealed up, those in a loft or in a cavity wall may require some serious DIY skills.
As such, owners should be advised to check a home insurance policy before attempting to fix a problem themselves, to avoid the chance of making their insurance policy void.
Other tips include mounting a thermostat correctly to give the best reading of temperature and making sure windows are double-glazed.
