Get a smoke alarm!
Firefighters were called to a house fire in West Cumbria on Sunday October 18, which led to the occupier having to be taken in to hospital for treatment.
A fire started within the three storey property in the early hours of Sunday morning. The blaze set alight in the living room which was on the first floor, as there was no fire alarm fitted in the property it was some time before anyone became aware of the flames.
Firefighters from Maryport were called to the property by neighbours. It was known that there was a man in the house, however he had breathed in so much smoke he had collapsed. The fire crew had to enter the property wearing breathing apparatus to try and find him. Once found they rushed him off to West Cumberland Hospital in an ambulance.
There is no evidence as to how the fire started, however it is a reminder that properties must be fitted with smoke detectors, which could have prevent this man from being taken in to hospital.
