Building more council housing

Posted on January 30th 2009

The prime minister has stated that there is a need for more council housing to be built to cope with the increasing demand for social housing.

The new homes will be built on land that planning permission has already been obtained by developers that were going to build but have stopped due to the financial downturn.

The move to build more social housing could help by reducing the 4.5 million people waiting for social housing.

The ‘right to buy’ council houses was introduced in the 1980’s and since then the amount of new social housing being built has never covered the amount that have been bought.
