Backpackers 'risking home' without insurance

British backpackers are threatening the security of their parents' homes as they tour the world without adequate - or sometimes any - travel insurance, it has been reported.

Many students taking time out abroad are travelling in the belief that if something should happen to them or their possessions they will be covered by their parents' home insurance policy.

Extreme sports, however, as well as many other kinds of activity, are often not covered by normal home insurance policies and the cost of flying an injured backpacker home could be financially crippling.

Tom Griffiths, founder of gapyear.com, said: "We will at some point see a parent lose their house or have to downsize because they've had to pay for an emergency situation."
