A diet for puss could be prudent
Putting the family cat on a diet could help avoid a nasty financial shock, owners have been warned.
Obesity is a growing problem among household pets as over-indulgent owners stray from traditional foods and allow their furry friends to pile on the pounds.
But while treats might be popular in the short-term, overweight pets are more prone to a number of illnesses, which could land owners with a hefty vet's bill.
"Obesity is a big problem in dogs and cats," said Jenny Davies of veterinary group, PDSA. "In the most recent PDSA survey, one in three dogs and one in four cats were overweight.
"Obesity is also linked to other conditions, such as diabetes, liver problems and heart disease," she added.
With mortgage bills, home insurance premiums and energy prices on the rise, the last thing homeowners need is another drain on their finances.
