1 in 10 DIYers claim on home insurance

Nearly eight million Brits have attempted DIY around the house a result of popular TV DIY shows, it has been reported.

However, despite the admirable figure of eight million, the number of those reporting a DIY mishap is almost as large, at almost six million (5.94 million).

The figures are a timely reminder that although DIY is a great money-saving way to add value to a home, it is also one of the quickest ways to reduce the value of a property if things go wrong.

Around one in ten of those that admitted to a DIY mishap had to claim on their insurance, meaning there could be expensive consequences to undertaking a DIY job with no contents insurance or buildings cover.

Simon Lamble, product director at an independent comparison website commented: "It is great that so many people have been inspired to undertake home improvement work by DIY programmes, but it is important to remember that television often makes tasks look easier than they are, so consider hiring a professional if the work is beyond your ability.
